Souder Testifies in Support of Hoosier Steel Manufacturers

International Trade Commission's Decision Expected This Fall

U.S. Rep. Mark Souder testified today in support of Hoosier steel manufacturers at a hearing of the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Souder argued in favor of maintaining tariffs on steel exports from 11 different nations—including China—that result from unfair trade practices.

"I strongly believe that we must maintain these tariffs to help offset the damage caused by China's unfair trade practices," Souder said. "China's currency manipulation directly harms our steel industry. If you can make steel cheaper than SDI, you're not playing on a level field. Until such a field exists, we need to continue the tariffs."

"We have a national security obligation to ensure the survival of our steel industry," Souder added.

The ITC is currently reviewing countervailing and antidumping tariffs on imports of certain types of steel from China and 10 other countries. A decision on whether to renew the tariffs for another five years is expected this fall.

Also represented at the hearing were Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI), Nucor Corporation and Valbruna Slater Stainless, Inc.
